Japanese pants for men over 35: three outfits for the weekend, dress-down Friday and the evening

Short answer: Wide trousers aren't a risk at 35, 45 or 55 if everything else stays calm. A plain top, muted colours, clean shoes – done. Here are three outfits for each of our three most-worn wide trousers: Arashi, Sakura and Mori.

Why wide trousers work after 35

What changes with the years isn't taste, it's patience with clothes that pinch. Wide trousers give you freedom when you sit, cycle or take the stairs. To make them look grown-up rather than yoga-retreat, you only need one principle: volume below, calm above.

  • Top: straight cut, not too long, no big logo.
  • Colour: at most one strong colour per outfit.
  • Shoes: plain trainers or leather shoes; nothing that looks like sportswear.

Size first, then the look

Our pieces run small. If you're between two sizes, take the larger one. The label carries an Asian size, one size above the size in the shop – order L and the waistband says XL. All three trousers have an elastic waist with a drawstring, and the Arashi and Sakura also have cuffs at the ankle. That forgives a little at the waist, but not in the length.

Arashi: the cotton harem trouser

The Arashi is our best-known trouser: textured cotton, dropped crotch, a leg that tapers into ribbed cuffs, deep side pockets. It comes in red, black and grey.

Weekend

Grey Arashi, white T-shirt, an open shirt over it, white trainers. For the Saturday market, the playground, breakfast at a friend's.

Dress-down Friday

Black Arashi with the white linen Miyabi shirt, sleeves turned once, dark leather shoes. Calm enough for the ten o'clock meeting.

Evening

Red Arashi, black T-shirt or black shirt, black shoes. The trousers are the statement; everything else steps back.

Sakura: straight, light, with cuffs

The Sakura is the quieter sibling: a textured cotton-linen blend, a straight leg into elastic cuffs, an elastic waist. It comes in seven colours, from light blue through green and beige to navy, black, grey and khaki.

Weekend

Khaki Sakura, grey sweatshirt, white trainers. In the sun, push the cuffs just above the ankle.

Dress-down Friday

Navy Sakura, white stand-collar shirt, brown leather shoes. This is the combination that looks least like "fashion" – and most like you.

Evening

Black Sakura, black knit or black sweatshirt, dark shoes. Tone on tone makes wide trousers look grown-up and lean.

Mori: corduroy with an extra-wide leg

The Mori is the trouser for the cold months: heavy wide-wale corduroy, an extra-wide leg with no cuffs, deep side pockets, an elastic waist with a drawstring. Colours: grey, black, camel, navy.

Weekend

Camel Mori, cream or white sweatshirt, white trainers. The corduroy ribs carry the outfit; it needs no more pattern.

Dress-down Friday

Navy Mori, light blue or white shirt, a dark jumper over it. In the office, corduroy reads instantly as "intentional", not "off duty".

Evening

Black Mori, black T-shirt, a coat on top. The wide leg falls heavy and straight as you walk.

Three mistakes we see often

Too much volume top and bottom. An oversized hoodie over wide trousers makes you look broad. Choose a straight, not-too-long top.

The wrong length. With cuffs, the trouser should bunch slightly at the ankle, not hang under the heel. If it looks too short, the size was too small – go one up.

Technical trainers. Running shoes with neon soles pull the trousers towards the gym. Plain is better here.

Which pair first?

If you've never worn wide trousers, start calm. Navy Sakura is the easiest way in: straight, tapered, a colour that goes with everything. If you want to try the harem cut, take the black Arashi – the dropped crotch is least noticeable in black. And if what you want right now is a warm trouser for autumn, start with the Mori.

Red and camel are wonderful, but they're the second pair, not the first. Once you notice how often you reach for the calm colour, you'll know how much statement you want.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear harem pants over 35?

Yes – as long as the rest stays calm. A plain top, muted colours and clean shoes turn wide trousers into a normal everyday outfit.

Which size should I order?

Our pieces run small. If you're between two sizes, take the larger one. The drawstring evens out the waist a little; it does nothing for the length.

Can I wear wide trousers to the office?

On a Friday or in a relaxed office, usually yes: a dark colour, a collared shirt, leather shoes or plain trainers. In a suit-and-tie office, probably not.

Which shoes go with harem pants?

Plain white trainers, dark leather shoes or Chelsea boots. Keep the shoe quiet: no loud running shoes, no chunky platforms.

What colour should my first wide trousers be?

Black or navy. You'll wear them most because they go with almost any top. Red, camel or khaki make a great second pair.
